the markets from foreign capitol and from jack lew as treasury nominee. u.s. economics editor for "the economist," and senior economics reporter steve leaseman. steve, first to you. what are the markets saying? what is jack lew's reputation in wall street and what do you see coming forward with debt negotiations? >> i think this appointment is being taken advisedly in the sense that it's a kind of wait and see. you know, from my perspective, having covered more or less -- more or less degrees, seven of the past treasury secretaries, jack lew does come to the table with a bio that perhaps has less independence in it than any treasury secretary i can remember. robert rubin, hailing from goldman sachs, salary summers was a renowned economist. paul o'neil from alcoa. there's nothing on lew's resume that suggests any measure of independence. markets want a little bit of independence from their treasury secretary. that said, if jack lew's appointment can, in fact, result in some kind of longer term budget deal affixed to entitlements, tax reform, corporate and individual that i think markets

some time off to be with his wife and family. as for his potential replacement, jacob "jack" lew, former fed vice chairman alan blinder says he's the right man right now. our next guest has worked with both geithner and lew. he's jared bernstein, senior fellow at the center on budget and policy priorities and former chief economist to vice president joe biden. jared, thanks for coming on the program. you know, as i just mentioned there, there are a lot of people who have different views on timothy geithner. some people say he was too easy on wall street. he wasn't tough enough on the banks. when the history book books are written, what do you think they're going to say about timothy geithner? >> well, look, it's often the case when you have people attacking from the left and right that you may have found a sweet spot in the middle. and i think the story is kind of one that's in the middle. i think when the history books are written, they're going to look at the measures that secretary geithner preside over as critical to inflating the financial sector when it was really poised to

treasury secretary. jack lew is a veteran of capitol hill and of more than one big major budget negotiations which is exactly what the president is facing right now. he's somebody with a low key demeanor who gets along well with others. his confirmation is expected to be not too difficult. what he doesn't provide is a strong business background or wall street ties, although he did work for citigroup for a while and he doesn't have the experience in financial regulation that tim geithner brought to the job having head of the federal reserve bank of new york during the financial crisis. but jack lew is expected to be announced today. the pecked speculation about his replacement as white house chief of staff has centered in the last 24 hours around dennis mcdonna. sources tell me that dennis mcdonough is the chief candidate. ron biden has already been a contender. wool see whether the president pairs the announcement of a new chief of staff with jack lew's appointment today. >> so jack lew seems to have the nomination locked up. danny krugman is expected to be looked go ahead at fo

'm chortling here because of your outrage over the $1 trillion coin matched with your outrage over jack lew, i can't figure out which is mor amusing. should we put that in the democratic party platform? >> it already is, that's what's amusing. >> very good, very good. >> let's talk about jack lew for a second. normally this position should go to somebody from the finance world. i think that, unfortunately, that's very difficult to do that because the finance world had a lot to do with the crash in 2008. but normally those are the best people for this job. for treasury. and if you look at george w. bush, his first two people were quite able, especially paul o'neill, but they did not, were not able to do the treasury the way paulson did, which helped us get out of this dreadful problem that we had that started in 2008. so it is good to have a finance person. on the other hand, i believe you're wrong about omb. jack lew's been a terrific director of omb and most importantly, he absolutely does have a lot of foreign policy experience. when you're the chief of staff to the president of the united s
